ERP introduces solar and green energy awareness to Kekana Gardens

This past Wednesday, ERP had a solar energy and green technology awareness training at Pfaranani Centre in Kekana Gardens. This was hosted in collaboration with University of Johannesburg’s Process Energy and Environmental Technology Station (PEETS), with the aim of assisting the local youth in setting up enterprises in green energy that will be able to address the unemployment challenge within the community. The next part of this training will now include the practical aspects, having identified 18 youth who are keen on growing businesses within the solar and green technology space.

#BIKES4ERP

When an invitation to be a part of the #BIKES4ERP initiative was extended to me, I jumped at the chance. I did not know what to expect, but after the first meeting I knew it was going to be something very special.

Gert Vermeulen and Nicolai van der Merwe share a passion for cycling and established a group called, BOMB (Believers on Mountain Bikes). In 2017 they raised funds and delivered 86 bicycles in the town of My Darling, which is situated in the Blouberg area in Limpopo Province. After the success of the first outreach, they planned for 8 months and raised funds once again. This time their tireless work enabled them to raise enough funds to deliver 100 bicycles in the rural town of Maretlwane, North West Province.

Here follows my account of an incredible initiative and a remarkable and rewarding weekend spent with a special group of people.

iLAB sponsors playground at orphan day care centre

iLAB, part of Groupelephant.com, recently sponsored a playground for the orphan day care centre in Kekana Gardens. Prior to this, the children did not have any form of playground, and had to improvise using tyres which in some instances doubled as flower beds. Today, the children have a jungle gym and playground that they call their own, and the excitement on their faces says it all. Thank you iLAB for bringing hope and happiness to these children.

Loziba elephant collaring

Loziba elephant collaring

2 elephants were collared in an open area in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province. The elephants have broken out of the reserve they were in and the owners do not have the finances to fix the fences or to recover the elephants. The government threatened to destroy the elephants within three months if nothing was done to stabilise the situation. By placing the collars on the elephants, we are able to manage two herds and ensure they do not move into community areas. This has temporarily secured their lives until a longer term solution is formulated.

An epic journey to deliver 100 bicycles to primary school children in deep rural South Africa kicked off about a year ago when ERP started raising funds and awareness for the Madikwe chapter of the #BIKES4ERP project.

This journey reached a climax on 18 August 2018 when a team of 14 guys and a brave lady delivered 100 bikes to 100 school kids in Madikwe.

The value of this small act of Ubuntu is best captured in a letter by Mr Dan Serumola, the #BIKES4ERP project coordinator from the Barokologadi tribe in Madikwe. “Thanks again for the bicycles. You are an example to us of a true servant spirit, esteeming others whilst at the same time Empowering the most vulnerable. Just like the saying goes “Use where needed most” I am certain the bicycles are a welcome relieve to the learner recipients. They will be of utmost importance in their journey for changing their lives through Education. Your donation of 100 bicycles means you understand just how extremely valuable Education is. To this we applaud you and your Teams at P.E.A.C.E. Foundation and ERP.”

Thank you to all our sponsors that assist in transporting the 100 bycicles to Madikwe region. We were supplied with Volkswagen vehicles, insurance and trailers. The sponsors are Strijdom Park VW, Seikel and Bronko Trailers.

ERP Launches MathU App for Math & Science

ERP Launches MathU App for Math & Science

ERP launched our first educational initiative under the MathU App drive, as we handed over 52 android devices to the matric class at Steve Biko Secondary. The MathU app is a dual-medium, android and textbook, educational device which functions as a ‘tutor in your pocket’ to assist learners with their maths and science marks. The launch happened over 2 days, with day 1 being at the Pfaranani Skills Centre in Kekana Gardens and day 2 at Loftus in Pretoria. Present were community members, the Grade 12 learners (beneficiaries), parents, and sponsors   . We are also excited to be launching an additional 120 MathU apps to the grade 10 class of the same school within the next week.
